12 Hours of Mesa Verde

Sleeping Ute in background

What could possibly be better than getting to ride one of your favorite mountain bike trails? Getting to ride that trail three times in a day, pushing yourself to your limits and maintaining the smile on your face at the same time.

I enjoy riding my mountain bike no matter what the trail or the conditions. The unique thing about 12 Hours of Mesa Verde is that the Phil's World trail system is one of the most fun courses you could possibly imagine. Almost 100% flowly fast single track with short punchy climbs, and technical rocky sections. The combination makes for one amazing ride on a single speed.

I have done this race for the past three years with a group of friends. This year one of our friends had bronchitis and we decided to stick it out with a three person team and get some extra laps in, I'm very glad we did this. I usually only get two laps and as my fitness has improved I want to get more mileage to push my limits.

My goal this year was to turn a lap under 1:20 as I have done 1:23 and 1:25 laps on the single speed last year. This year I did the opening lap, albeit slower than I wanted due to traffic, it was still mileage and that's training.

I decided that I'm going all out on my 2nd lap in order to achieve my goal. My subconscious was telling me that it was going to be hard to reach my goal considering I had already done a 17ish mile lap semi-hard. I approached the Rib Cage and noticed I had quite a bit of time left for a sub 1:20 lap, I decided to use up whatever I had left to reach my goal. I raced in to the exchange area with a lap time of 1:17....goal reached and then some.

While I was out on the course I noticed a lot of people with flat tires. This reminded me that the last time I had put sealant in my single speeds tires was last years 12 Hours of Mesa Verde race! I stopped by the NoTube's van where I found Kenny Wehn enjoying some well deserved rest after his super fast lap. I asked Kenny for an empty Stan's sealant sample and he gladly obliged. I returned to the camp site, removed my valve stems, poured some of my sealant into the sample container and then dumped that into my wheels.  I felt much better knowing I had some fresh Stan's sealant in my wheels

I enjoyed some well deserved rest and hung out for a little while with my 10 month old daughter Arya and my wonderful wife Heather who made me some very welcomed lunch! My friends Terry and Kevin some of their best lap times in the past 3 years, everyone was excited to be racing and racing so well. I went out for the teams 7th lap, during the first half of the lap I wasn't feeling super strong. I found my legs on the 2nd half and told myself I'm going to turn another sub 1:20, I did just that coming in @ 1:19.

It was absolutely amazing to do an extra lap and still destroy my previous PRs on my 2nd and 3rd laps. I am feeling very strong and very happy with how far I've come in the past two years since I started taking cycling seriousl and joined the NoTubes Endurance Team.

The wind between my wheels

Thursday night I headed out with Lucas and some of his friends. We climbed up Carbon Junction to Crites and then headed down Skull Rock and around extended south Rim. Had a great time, some fast riders in that pack.

Saturday Terry and I headed out for a Kennebec to Hermosa ride. Heather shuttled us to the top of Kennebec and then we started the long hike a bike journey up Indian Ridge (see photo: above).

After reaching the top we began our traverse along the Colorado Trail. While riding on the top of Indian Ridge the winds picked up a little bit and you could hear a whistle from the spokes as the wind whisked through them..pretty cool.

Eventually we reached the Big Bend trail which Terry had said he would like to do. The trail was in great shape and a lot of fun towards the top. Definately some trees down over the trail but it was gorgeous with tons of Aspen groves and some fun down hill. Eventually the trail turned into a steep grassy hill with route finding sketchy at points, lots of hike a bike due to this.

We reached Hermosa and at this point my body gave up. I felt horrible for the rest of the ride, Hermosa Creek was still enjoyable...on the downhills that is. Eventually we made it home...

36.8 mile ride. Not to shabby

I had promised Heather I would take her out to eat if she shuttled us up the hill. With our anniversary so close (tuesday) we decided to go to Sweeneys for some delicious food. A bottle of white zinfandel at dinner and a delicous Ska Double blonde once we got home finished the night perfectly.

2010 24 Hours of Moab

Great weather and great friends for 24 hours of Moab. Picked up Jonathan at the airport on Wednesday night. Rode the gulch on Thursday and then headed out to Moab for some 24 hour racing.

We camped at Windwhisle campground above the canyon lands. Drove to the needles overlook for some awesome scenery and then headed into moab.

Race went great, each person on my team completed 3 laps. I knocked off 10 minutes from my previous best time and ended up riding my night lap at the exact same time down to the seconds of my previous years fastest lap.

Can't wait till next year!

Lap 1 : 1:27:58
Lap 2 : 1:36:49
Lap 3 : 1:39:59

Goal for next year is to do consistent sub 20s...I can do this

Wednesday and Saturady Ride

Wednesday was an interesting ride. Set out with Matt, Tyler, and Jim to do some Horse gulch riding. Matt and I were the only two to make it up Telegraph without touching down...Jim decided we should go down crites instead of our usual route. During the decent down crites I was pedaling in middle ring for extra speed and clipped a rock. I then flew through the air and landed on my side and back, somehow coming up to my feet...it was my fastest crash ever but my injuries were minor. A few scrapes and bruises but not bad enough to end the ride. My hip, back, and shoulder was very sore the next day and even today still has some black and blue's.

My left Candy C pedal is also bent and basically now junk :(

Saturday was hotter then hell. My body felt strong but my efort felt weak due to the heat. I did some of the race course that was setup for Sunday. Telegraph->grandview->cowboy->southrim, up the road to the cowboy crossover to see where the race went, then back down big canyon.

The road between big canyon and cowboy is absolutely destroyed from dozers, lame.

Monday Night - Long ride w/ some night riding

Terry and I set out to do Jones Creek->Pinkerton->Dutch Creek->Hermosa. We brought the lights with just in case we got caught out there in the dark (We did).

The pedal up Jones is brutal but it really makes you feel awesome as you look down the switchback and realize how far you've climbed. Pinkerton is an interesting trail with some crazy downhill followed by hikeabike up hills. Dutch creek was super fun, we ended up turning the lights on before getting out of dutch creek(there were some sketchy technical sections in the dark).

Eventually we hit hermosa and that was uber fun to do with the lights.
